Frequently asked questions.
I’ve never set foot in a gym before can I try Beginner Calisthenics class?
Yes, you can. There are no prerequisites for this class, and we always go over the basics of each movement and how to progress/regress them to help you achieve your goals.
I’ve never done fitness before should I start in classes or personal training?
It depends if you find motivation and comfort learning in group settings or if you learn better solo with focused coaching. Many students take a combination of personal training and attend classes – it depends on what your goals are! You can always call or email if you have any questions specific to your journey.
I’ve seen your Instagram stories, and it looks like there are some very strong people in beginner calisthenics class, can I still come?
There are a variety of skill levels within ISA beginner cali classes because the main goal of the class is to progress you in your basic skills to an intermediate/advanced level and acquire a muscle up. Some students have been in beginner cali class working towards more advanced skills for 1yr+ and as a result their basic skills and strength level are very good. Everyone you see doing something amazing started as an ultra beginner so don’t get discouraged, you’ll get there too!
I’m actually great at Calisthenics already but I only want to come to your muscle up workshop week or handstand beginner week.
We announce on social media 2-3 weeks in advanced before we host a workshop week. Stay tuned and feel free to drop into those classes specifically (note, drop in for workshop weeks is a higher cost $50). @indomitablespiritacademy on Instagram.
Advanced Calisthenics class looks a bit wild!
Truly, it is. Come prepared to work very hard. This class by definition is not easy and it will require you to dig deep and then dig deep again. With that said, just like any other class or personal training at ISA we pride ourselves on having solid coaching for any level of athlete. So don’t worry if you can’t do a weighted muscle up yet, you’ll get there, don’t worry if you can’t planche yet, you’ll get there!
I can’t muscle up, can I still come to Advanced Calisthenics class?
No you can’t. You must achieve a muscle up (or have achieved one in the past) and be intimately familiar with the movement. If you have had one on one training with coach MikeMike and are very close to a muscle up you may also be eligible. The main reason for this is Muscle ups are usually part of the program and although we go over tips and tricks on how to make them better or even how to do weighted muscle ups you will be expected to do them without much guidance as part of the workout.
I’ve been trying to achieve a pull up/muscle up for years but I still can’t! How long will it take?
This is greatly dependent on what strength level and fitness history you come with! Often times there’s a need to change programming, adjust volume or method of training, and take into account your body type and injury history to achieve those specific movements. Sometimes more is more, sometimes less is more. The time question can’t be answered unless we know what you’re coming with and how you have progressed so far.
